It’s Monday and You are looking at removing a section of your webpages and have decided to move another section of your website to another folder. Now as an SEO, you would know this would be a suicidal move considering how it would affect your search engine rankings on the search engines (If not handled properly). So how can you go about making changes which would have the least impact on your website’s rankings.Step 1 - You need to know what kind of HTTP header to use, 404, 301, 302 or 200. The 2 HTTP headers that you would require for this example, would mainly be 404 - page cannot be found and 301 - permanent redirect.

Step 2 - Now find relevant or related content that is similar to the content that you are going to remove. This way, your users would still be able to find subject related content. Make sure you do a URL mapping of all the new landing pages, as you would be needing them for the redirects later.

Step 3 - Once you have manage to map out all the related pages, you can now set the type of HTTP header each page should have. For those with related content, put the 301 HTTP code and for those without, place 404 HTTP code. This would allow the search engines to know which pages have been permanently moved and which have been deleted and would be removed from the search engine index.

NOte - It is best to conduct a 301 redirect for pages that have been uploaded for sometime, as your pages might have good quality inbound links which you wouldnt want to waste.

Also when you conduct a 301 redirect, you might experience a drop in traffic and rankings as the search engines need time to update their algorithms.

I was reading Rmccarley’s 27 link building tips over at linkersunion.com today and I thought it was a great list, which inspired me to come out with my version of effective free link building techniques. These link building techniques have helped me successfully gain inbound links on my projects.Hope this would be helpful to you.

 1. Ask and you shall receive

When it comes to link building, I am very pro about this option for there’s always no harm in asking. You never know what might happened, with a simple email request.

But it might not be the most effective or efficient method.

A sample guideline that I use for my link building:

- Introduce yourself, place your name in the email
- What do you do, short statement would be great (think towards a catch phase)
- Why do you think they should link to your website
- Call to action, a link or codes for them to cut and paste onto their website.
 2. Thou shall build make new friends online

Relationships in life is very important, even in the digital world having a big network of friends helps increase your chances of getting new inbound links. This shouldn’t be the recipocal type of link strategy, let it work like a refer a friend model.

You can start by going to social networking sites like friendster.com, AdGabber.com, to name a few.

 3. Take the first step list topic related websites on your blogroll

By making the first move and adding related websites on your blogroll, it helps increase the chance for these websites to link back to you or at least you can approach them easier when you are trying to be friends.

Why not start now by adding my website on your blogroll, I would add you if your website is search related

 4. Talk to your vendors

If you are an in-house SEO paying alot for some of your vendor services, just go ahead ask your vendors for a link. If they say no, you can try to entice them by saying you can use us as a case study for your future clients on their website.

 5. Compile a list of freebies

Everyone loves FREE stuff, you can either create some white papers, templates or tools for all to use. People will link to you, but wait to make things easier, you can compile your list of freebies on the internet and offer them on your website (of course keep the acknowledgement). People will still link to you if your resource is good stuff.

 6. Help others while helping yourself - donate, sponsor or contribute to a good cause

Money doesnt need to change hands here, depending on your business. If you are running a SEO consultancy firm, you could help them optimize their websites for greater exposure, or if you are a lawyer you can provide free advice or if you want you can volunteer to help out at their location in exchange for that link. Sound like pretty hard work, but at least you are doing some good in the process of gaining that link right.

 7. Know thy enemy’s strength, Investigate your competition

I know it’s commonly said the enemy of your enemy(competition) is your friend. But in the link building world, the friend of your enemy is also your friend. Why, because by doing a link:www.domain.com on your enemy the search engines would return a set of links that are already linking to your competitor. So being good link builders, you would definately go to these websites and ask for a link right, after all they are already listing your competitors.

Note: Google returns a sample number of backlinks and for Yahoo you got to use siteexplorer.yahoo.com.

 8. Share your knowledge, answer questions on Yahoo Answers

Go to answers.yahoo.com and see what are the questions being asked that you have answers too. Answer them and place a link as your sign off or within the answer (if it makes sense). Its a way to get traffic and some link love, give it a try.

PS: if this is helpful to you why not drop me a comment.

Here’s some of my findings to the above question. Having a keyword in the domain helps initially, but its not the end all, as you would need good content and good inbound links in order to rank well on the search engines. As many of us have heard content is king. With good keywords and optimized content, one can rank high for a long time as your website is fundamentally strong.

An example would be if you enter computers in Google (http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&q=computers&btnG=Search) you will see that Apple and Dell turns up within the top 3 positions. There isn’t a computer keyword but the content and associations given to the websites helped determined the rankings.

SEO works on the fact that the higher is your website’s search engine ranking, the higher is the possibility of visitors to your website. SEO involves selecting and optimizing your website for specific keywords and key phrases that are searched for frequently on the Internet. A good SEO work ensures that when a user searches for your keywords or phrases, your website is among the top results.

SEM or Search Engine Marketing describes the tasks performed to use various search engines to promote and market a website. SEM involves researching specific keywords and key phrases to optimize the website with, submitting the website to various directories and search engines, and using various Pay per Click (PPC) tools to promote the website. The main purpose of SEM is to improve your website’s search engine listing so that it gets maximum exposure.

For example, you may choose to launch a website to promote a new baby product. To ensure that you get genuine visitors to your website, you will need to perform research on the keywords for which to optimize your website. You may also choose to sign up a few affiliates and look at the benefits of PPC advertising. All these activities that you will perform are the part of SEM.

If you are starting up your website with several focus areas or specialties. What would be a good way for you to start off on your site architecture? As in would a sub folder be a better choice or a directory ? Personally, if your website is new and requires a fair bit of SEO, I would prefer using directories. This concept would help Google and other engines look at the site as a place where there are more pages (bigger website).

The problems with sub domains, would be the search engines look at them as different websites. This makes your websites’ content rather separated then consolidated. Also it seems that the SERP for these sub-domains don’t turn up too well on most search terms.

Trillions of Billions of content pages make up the wide world of Internet. Keeping a house clean and arranged with proper placement for each household item is so big a task for each of us that it is a much despised daily chore. Ever wonder who or what keeps the Internet clean organized and keep them in arms length for you when you need it? This humongous task of making sure the right set of data is kept organized and delivered as information to the right folks when they need it are done by the Search Engines (SE). There are many popular search engines that deliver search results for countless number of searches every Nano-second. The Internet is the first place folks go for obtaining any type of information. The Internet has become the knowledge warehouse of what the world knows. Well almost true. If you have not discovered the full potential of the search engines it is not too late.

Coming to think about the knowledge we are "allowed" to acquire in our early formative years, it has been so narrow don’t you think. You have been taught what is right and with knowledge that is so "Local". Different perspectives to the same problem are what has created this great species that is ruling this earth and in some time soon the universe. The internet is the place to go to understand and know about the different perspectives and learn a lot more that is "Global" for "Free". Internet is the best medium for free speech and nothing comes close to it. With freedom comes responsibility and with freedom comes the power of choice. It is said with experience that when toddlers are told not to grab a light bulb, they never listen. When the hold it once and feel the misery of the heat they never again reach for them again. Some of these kids may go ahead and create light bulbs that are cold for touch but does the same functionality in the future. Man is a kid at various stages of life on various aspects of life and knowledge domains. Internet provides a means to acquire knowledge freely and based on bad choices they may get burnt but they may find a good alternative or something more useful to our human race.

The topic title and the content till now seem to be a mismatch and I see you smile at reading this line. Let me do the correlation real quick to get you back on the topic. Search engines are the masters of the Internet world. When someone wants to acquire information on a topic the search results is what defines what the person gets to learn. This is similar to the localization concept I mentioned earlier. What is troubling me is the popularity of a few search engines, I equate them to the perspectives that we are boxed into. Your knowledge expansion really depends on what is available as the top 20 results in the search engines. Getting to learn the same perspective as anybody else doesn’t gain you much in the long term. There is reason behind each person’s existence ? to make a positive difference. Unless you are exposed to the multiple perspectives and vast knowledge out there that needs your help to make things a little better there remains a task undone. We will see a little bit more about what concepts have taken the job of rescue mission from a boxed in Internet world in the next part. Meanwhile you can search using the search engine in the resource box to get a different set of results for a different perspective.

Author suggests a dosage of atleast two searches before sleep each day for the following search engines: TEOMA.com and this Search Engine Listing Website. If you forgot to take the directed dosage you have the liberty to take twice the number of dosage when you get to remember the same.
Author is a freelance writer for the webs many great websites and can be contacted at indyan at gmail dot com. Permission is granted to reprint the article with all portions of this article intact including this resource box in its entire form.
