More and more search engines rank your web pages based on the number of links that point to your web site (link popularity). Google uses link popularity as its most important factor in ranking sites. HotBot, AltaVista, MSN, Inktomi, and others also use link popularity in their formulas. In the near future every major search engine will use link popularity, so developing and maintaining good link exchange campaigns are essential to the success of your business. Also, finding the right partner to exchange links with is equally as important as becoming a member of a link farm can be devastating to your long term search goals.
Your exchange link partner should be reputable in the industry, and should provide links back to you on pages that have a high page rank. The end goal is to have the greatest number of websites pointing to you saying on the link itself, “Your Company ? Offering (insert your key phrases here)”.
For a good ranking on Google, Inktomi and Altivista, you need good links that point to your site. If you develop a strong content oriented site you can persuade thousands of other webmasters to link to you or to trade links with you. If you want to do it yourself, all you need is the right content, the right email letter, and a keen eye for finding sites that well link to your site.
The key is to develop content people want to link to and then get out there and make the contacts by visiting people’s sites, sending out personalized emails to webmasters of sites you have visited, and networking in discussion groups.
You can also make posts in forums related to your industry to increase your link popularity. Just do a search on any search engine with your industry + forums or discussions and you should be able to find a few discussion boards where you can make posts.
Make sure that you find a way to participate on the discussion as opposed to just posting an ad that’s not related to what people are talking about. Another way that you can greatly increase the link popularity of your website is by publishing articles. There are literally thousands of ezine and newsletter publishers that would love to publish your article on their ezine.
Again, if you search for ezines related to your industry you should find plenty of places where you can submit an article and see it bring lots of targeted traffic. Make sure you place your resource box at the bottom of the article and require publishers to keep it there.

Lets face it. Search Engines rule the World Wide Web today. Anytime you want to look up some information or a product you want to buy, you put the relevant keyword in the search field of a major SE like Google. And Viol? The efficient little engine throws up pages and pages of website URLs which carry your keyword.SEO has become the most popular and the most effective strategy for increasing website traffic today. It gives you more exposure, pulls in more qualified visitors and helps you substantially increase your income. So, if you are a home based business owner with a serious web presence you would know the importance of attracting quality traffic to your website. Among all the strategies and tactics you can employ to attract focused web traffic to your site, optimising your website to get in top SE rankings is the most important. However to keep your rankings that way you have to be on top of what is happening in the SE industry. To understand how search engines work, spend some time at: http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/0,4621,316408,00.html
Here are some great ways to optimize your site to get to the top of the SE rankings and stay that way:
Reciprocal links: Fish out relevant (but non-competing) websites that complement your services and products and ask them to link to your site. It’s a big hit with search engines to see a large number of sites linked to yours. However more important than quantity is the quality of the linked sites. Search engines look at how relevant the links are, that is, how much the content of the linking site has in common with the content on your site. The more relevant, the better. SE s also gauge the importance of these sites; their online presence and the number of hits they get. In a nutshell SE s believe that company matters!
Keyword is the king:however much the SE industry changes its rules, algorithms, indexing methods?. the right keyword is still the most important reason they will pick up your site to put on their top result pages. So keyword inclusion and placement is very important. The best places to place your chosen keywords are:
- Domain name: Putting your keyword in your domain name is both most obvious and the most important. But take care to put it in the root of the URL, not in the stem?that could SE s angry and do you more harm than good.
- Title tags: in the title tags of your source code
- Meta description: In the Meta description of your site.
- Meta keyword tags
CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT: Create content rich information pages to get traffic coming your way. A word of caution?unless these pages contain information of some value to the potential visitors SE s may not pick them up. Search engines hate “pointer pages” that have no content and exist only to add to the number of links pointing to a site.
Online Directories: Almost all major portals have industry specific directories. Submit your website’s URL to directories like Yahoo and About.com as well as smaller directories. This will increase your chances of getting a boost in your SE rankings.
Go Forth and Multiply: Create your own community of sites that point to each other. A good idea would be to have different sites if you sell different types of products and services. You can also concentrate on using specific keyword phrases on each site. The more content rich sites that point to your site the better. So that’s another great way to boost your search engine ranking.
Now lets look at some of the most common mistakes that can prove to be the undoing of your website.
- The number 1 mistake is not putting enough CONTENT. Your website must have keyword ?rich content that adds value to the visitors’ info search. Without meaningful content your visitors can click out just as easily only to never come back again.
- Using frames is a technique that makes the Webmaster’s life easy but can easily prove to be a major put off for SE s. SE s may find it difficult to move around in frames and will fail to include all of the pages in their list. These missed out pages will never show up to the people who are looking for them and defeat the whole purpose of your exercise.
- Enclosing text in graphics is another technique used by web designers to give the website an even, uniform look for every visitor. Unfortunately, SE s cannot differentiate between a photo in a graphic and text in a graphic. Hence they will overlook it. There you go again! Beat this problem by putting the real information in plain text that search engines can recognize.
Being visible the Internet is the first step to being found on the Internet.
So take advantage of these proven success tips and avoid the traps that will make your rankings fall down in the SE abyss. What you’ll be left with is a great website ranking bringing in focused qualified visitors to help you boost your sales.

Getting a high ranking on Google is a big achievement. There are many factors that go into pulling a high page rank. I have put together a small list of things that should not be overlooked when optimizing your site. Let’s start from the top:META Tags- Sorry, but Google doesn’t read META tags. That includes the KEYWORD tag. Some search engines, however, still use them.
URL- Having a keyword or words in URL will help you somewhat. Having a key word in your URL is not by any means a guarantee, but it never hurts.
TITLE Tag- This is an important step, use this tag wisely. Place your top keywords here. Remember, your page is indexed starting from the top of the page. Make this one count.
Site content- The first paragraph of your site is a crucial part of your optimization. This will also be used as your site’s description. Be careful not to overdo it on the keywords. Make sure your content makes sense. Your keywords should make up a total of 6% to 8% of your page content. An average of three hundred words is a good rule of thumb.
Header Tags- Header tag < H1 > should be considered important. Make headers uniform on your site. I like using them on the top of my page just before the first paragraph.
ALT Tags- These tags are great for adding keywords to images, so take advantage of them. I also use mouse over text with linked text.
Links- Any links you have on your site should have key terms in them. Never use “Click Here” or other unrelated words when creating links.
Bonus tip: When exchanging text links, use key phrases as the actual links. This will certainly help you out.
For Example:
Affordable Search Engine Optimization & Web Site Marketing Mr. SEO is the leader in SEO. We handle targeted traffic, marketing and more. We also offer Web Site Marketing Articles to help you get more traffic to your site.
Links exchange- This will help boost your overall ranking. It’s actually better to be linked from another site (one way) than reciprocal (both sites linking to each other). Being linked one way is a huge bonus. However, the following should be kept in mind.
A: The site you are linking to needs to be related to your site.
B: Google’s page rank of the site should be higher than yours; the higher the better.
C: Avoid linking to sites that have too many links. A site that has forty or more links will only hurt you.
Bonus Tip: See where you rank on Google by using this free tool. http://www.googlerankings.com/ultimate_seo_tool.php
This Google ranking tool will show you under what keywords you are found on. Use this to help adjust the keywords you want to be found under. Be sure to check your ranking before you start any optimization. Then do it again 3 ? 4 weeks after you have made your adjustments. See if your ranking has gone up.

There are a lot of ways to promote your website and, unfortunately, a lot of these methods are mistakes. Here is a list of some of the more common mistakes (often referred to as Black Hat SEO) that you should steer well clear of.1. Bad Neighbourhoods
These sites are also known as free for all (FFA) pages and link farms. They serve no other purpose other than to list tens of thousands of unrelated websites. Not only will these sites not provide your site with any traffic, certain search engines will ban sites who participate.
2. Over Optimization
Optimizing your web pages for a particular search engine can be a good thing. Over-optimizing can defeat the purpose, however. Search engines are catching on quickly to pages that appear ‘over-optimized’. Stuffing keyphrases into your pages is the most common problem. Never use hidden (invisible) text to add keywords. You will get caught, and your site will get banned.
3. Doorway Pages
Doorway pages are orphaned web pages that are typically optimized for a particular keyphrase and a particular search engine. They are promoted to the search engine in an effort to achieve high rankings. They are not linked back to by any other page on the website and, as such, search engines are able to flush them out quite easily and penalize the entire site.
4. Traffic Generation Scams
Services that purport to drive lots and lots of traffic to your website are typically not very useful. The traffic tends to come from seedy places like domain names that have lapsed in payment or commonly misspelled domain entries. Most of the traffic that hits these pages is accidental and is therefore of no value to you. Other traffic may come from other participants in the program who are required to visit other websites to gain ‘credits’ for their own site. Again, this traffic is not targeted and therefore of no value. Some traffic may even be generated by automated software!
5. Shadow Domains
Shadow domains are small, optimized, supplementary websites designed to drive traffic to a different website. The way this works is that an SEO company will design and optimize a website on your behalf. The danger here is that the you do not own this new website; the SEO company does! This means that if the relationship sours, they may choose to redirect this site’s traffic to whomever they choose (see #4 above), or even sell the site to one of your competitors! Be very, very careful of this technique, as some supposed search engine ‘experts’ even use this method (no naming of names here, however).
One final note: Any company that tells you that it can achieve ‘guaranteed’ rankings is either lying to you or using some of these Black Hat techniques. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee a number one result within (unpaid) search results. When choosing a search engine optimization company to work with, be sure you feel comfortable with them and trust them (e.g. money back guarantee). And if you decide to promote your website yourself, consider yourself a little better educated against these common mistakes.

You can rank number one (Or at least in the top ten) for just about any search phrase by just buying text link ads, even if the web site isn’t related to the search phrase in anyway, it can still rank in the top ten of the search results. Some web site owners see this as the only true way to the top ten. So, should you buy your way to the top? Or should you play it safe? Some say it’s better to be safe than sorry. While others say if you play it safe and never make it to the top ten of the search results, your losing anyway. So, it must be much better not to play by the rules and get a top ten ranking and make a little money before you get banned from the search engines. Well, it’s not that easy and you can see the cons and pros in both ways.
First let’s look at the pros of playing it safe. The first one is obvious and it’s that you have a lot less chance of getting banned and much safer. At the same time you can peacefully sleep at night without worrying whether you’ll be banned the next day you wake up. It also allows you to save money and spend it else where, such as PPC (Pay Per Click) search engines, banner advertisement, mailing list and offline advertising.
You can also rank number one without buying text link ads if you provide good content because many other webmasters will link to you just because you have good content and it provides their users with valuable information. You could also exchange links with other web sites. If you correctly SEO (Search Engine Optimization) your web site you can get a fairly good search engine ranking.
There are also several cons of playing it safe. Besides the fact that text link ads help improve your search engine ranking, they also bring in a good amount of traffic. In order to get a good amount traffic from links you would need more than just a few backlinks, but since you won’t be buying them, you will not being getting that many web sites linking to you and most of them are from web sites that are not popular among internet users.
All the major search engines see backlinks from quality sites as a vote for the web site being linked to, by playing it safe it will take much longer to get a top ten ranking because of the lack of backlinks. It can take years before you will rank for any popular search term because you will only be getting links the natural way. Without many backlinks you’ll also have a hard time getting in the search engines.
Now the pros of buying text link ads. Buying text links ads will help improve your search engine ranking, which can bring more traffic than from a link from any web site because. Each link acts as a vote your web site in the search engine’s eye, so the more you buy, the higher you’ll rank. If you buy an enough text link ads your web site can rank number one for just about any search term.
Text link ads can also send a fair amount of visitors that’s targeted. Resulting in more and new customers. Getting a link from a web site that’s trusted and well known can help build your web site’s brand and increase your credibility because visitors will see the link as a recommendation to your web site. Which will also help bring in new customers because they trust you more than they did before.
The cons of buying text link ads make many people think twice about buying text link ads. It will cost a lot of money to buy text link ads. You need to pay for your link to stay on a web site for at least two months before you will see any major boost in your search engine ranking. You may never get your money back because there’s so many things that can go wrong.
It can also hurt your search engine rankings if you don’t do it correctly and safely. You should never buy a lot of text links ads all at once, some search engines can detect this and may ban your web site from the search results due to this. There are other ways the search engines can find out that the links are being sold, meaning some links on certain web sites may never count in the search engines.
The Conclusion - Now that you have seen the pros and cons you can decide for your self whether you should buy them or not.

In a perfect world, everyone would be honest. In a perfect world, no one would violate search engine policies to try get a better listing.
They’d respect the terms set out by the search engines. It’s not a perfect world. And especially not when it comes to the highly competitive search engine optimization industry. Prime example;
1) Here is a quote taken from a “search engine optimization” website;
“Sophisticated doorway pages (those that contain unique optimized text) are still an excellent way to rank with the search engines.”
2) Here is a quote taken from Google’s Webmaster Guide;
“Another illicit practice is to place “doorway” pages loaded with keywords on the client’s site… The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant…”
When I was in the sandbox (and I don’t mean the Google Sandbox) my mother taught me to be sure my information comes from the horse’s mouth. That’s still good advice today.
Which are lies and which are misconceptions?
Who knows? Did the SEO (search engine optimizer) actually read Google’s Guidelines? Is it old advice that hasn’t been updated for years?
The truth is, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that you need to know the guidelines because you will be the one to pay the price for anything done on your behalf. They are publicly posted for that reason. You should read these two;
http://www.google.com/webmasters/ and
http://www.google.com/webmasters/seo.html
I am not an “SEO” - I do not offer SEO services. I’m a website designer that believes designers should understand search engines since they’re creating the pages that search engines will be indexing. I know that if a search engine optimizer promises you good ranking and violates search engine policies to get them, it’s your site that will be removed from Google. Not theirs. You need to know that, too.

MLM has been around way before the Internet. It is a few steps above a chain letter. Well, maybe more then a few steps. MLM has paved the way for people to have their own business. It can start out as side money and flourish into a very profitable business. Now, you are probably saying to yourself “Joe, what do you know about MLM?” Well, folks in the early days I did MLM. Yes, I am a not proud of it. Not because it’s MLM but, because I wasn’t any good at it. Thank goodness though. I may not have found my calling in SEO if I did. What I am trying to say is…MLM is hard. Nowadays, they try to make it easier by offering you a cookie cutter site. What? A cookie cutter site? Isn’t that bad SEO? YES! MLM in their attempt to help their down-line are actually making it harder. You want to spend more time promoting your site by:
Writing content
Testimonials
Recommendations
Providing tips about the items or products
..and so on.
MLM companies force you to throw more of your hard earn money into advertising. If you know the name of a well established MLM company type it into Google. What you get is dozens of sites. Many of them are the same exact site dominating over the others. It is usually the companies own site. Generating leads that YOU will have to pay to get. While your cookie cutter site fights for spots on Google adwords. Which by the way YOUR MLM has the top 3 positions. So, how do you win?
Create your own web site. Find keywords related to what you sell and not the company name. If you cannot do that then create a blog. Place tips, recommendations, and testimonials and so on in your blog. Do your own Google campaign. Find message boards, blogs and websites that have interests in what you sell. You can even do a link exchange with other blogs.
Until MLM companies’ see how valuable SEO is to the success of their business and yours you can never be successful. They will always tell you about the successes and never the failures. It is true it takes money to make money. But, if the main company corners the market on leads how can you ever make it ahead? Go door to door?
Take matters into your own hands. Or, better yet. Demand your up-line provide you with a better way to achieve your goals. They are profiting from all your hard work. So, let them help you as much as possible. If that doesn’t work take matters into your own hands. The worst you can do is make things better.

Meta tags are an absolute must from a search engine optimisation perspective, there are many mistakes that can be made by not including these or even trying to ’spam’ the SE’s using them so heres a quick summary of the three main ones:Meta Page Title Tag
The title tag is supported by all search engines and should be considered as the most important element in your optimisation process. Why is this you may ask? Well the page title is the first thing search engine spiders and human visitors will see. Your title appears at the top of the page in the browser and the title also becomes the clickable link in the search engine listings and should therefore be concise, accurate and include your keywords.
Meta Description Tag
The meta description tag is supported by most of the search engines, it is not as important as the Title Tag because the web page viewer will not see it but the description is sometimes used in the search listings under the title tag and as such should be an accurate and keyword driven description of what the page value is. Google usually uses an abstract of the page content and will use the description tag only if it cannot find enough on page content to form a page description.
Meta Keywords Tag
Due to massive abuse this tag is very rarely useful but in my opinion should still be used. Include your main keywords in here but do not go crazy, 4 or 5 is more than enough usually. It is far better to include your keywords in the on page copy and will hold better weight with the SE’s as such. Please remember however that it still has to read well to the human eye.
The Meta Tags should be placed between the HEAD> and /HEAD> tags of your web page and should follow the following format:
Page Title

It seems the excitement about search engine optimization fades in and out from time to time. The more people talk about search engine optimization (SEO) the more it seems to be the logical choice for bringing customers to your site. However, there are some points that I haven’t seen anyone else make as of yet about the effectiveness of SEO versus the effectiveness of building a responsive list. I think you’ll be surprised to see which one comes out on top.Rules and Regulations
There are rules and regulations for almost everything in life. List building and SEO are no different.
Rules for SEO: Your HTML coding has to be just so in order to rank highly on the engines. Your copy (text) also needs to include specific keywords a certain number of times in specific places or you might not be accepted. And if you are accepted, unless you follow all the “dos” and “don’ts” of SEO, you’ll likely not see the top 10? or even the top 50.
Rules for List Building: Offer a good product or service; notify your list about it, and watch the sales come in.
The Only Constant Is Change
If you do get accepted in the search engines, you might be tempted to rest easy. Don’t! As we’ve seen in recent months, search engines can change their policies and ranking orders at the flip of a switch. If you depend on search engines for all your traffic, such a change could leave you completely out of business. Not good!
Lists on the other hand are built from loyalty? not rules and regulations. The people who subscribe to your list, ezine, or newsletter are there because they want to be. They’ve come to you because you offer them something of quality? something unique.
If you change the design or copy on your site, it won’t matter one bit to the members of your list. They’ll still be there for you. If the search engines decide they’re only going to list sites that use the colors blue, green, and purple? it won’t affect you at all.
Sales vs. Leads
Truth be known, SEO only drives “leads” to your site? not sales. On the other hand, list building puts your offer in front of those who have already checked you out, decided they liked what you had to say, and chose to stick with you. These are loyal, pre-qualified individuals who are waiting to receive your next mailing and purchase your next product.
Free, Automatic, and Viral
Lastly, list building can be done at no cost. List building can happen automatically and can (and should) be a viral process.
If you produce a quality list that offers something of value, others will want to tell their friends about you. This process of automatic, viral marketing costs you nothing whatsoever and works like a dream because your subscribers are making unsolicited recommendations to those who trust them.
This process not only drives new subscribers to your list, but also ultimately makes new sales for you.
Search engines, on the other hand, do not operate virally. While some are free, many charge for the “opportunity” to be reviewed for inclusion. Still others charge on a pay-per-click basis, which can get very costly without ever bringing in one sale.
When all is said and done, which one is better? Lists or search engines? While both can have an important role in your marketing plan, if what you’re looking for is the generation of more sales? building a responsive list simply can’t be beat.
