Registering Domain Names Made Simple

Registering a domain name can be a very straight forward activity - or it can be labor intensive, stressful and a total waste of your time and hard earned money. With a few simple basic tips and some advance thought, you will be on “the easy path”.

The single most important ingredient going into domain registration is the critical decision of choosing the right name. Put in the time to do advance research into a name which reflects the general topic and nature of your online business. This will go hand-in-hand with the next element - keyword selection. There are a number of keyword selection
tools available (such as on Yahoo business - formerly Overture.com, and Google). Combining you keywords and domain name into interwoven terms will greatly help with search engine optimization activities later on.

There is a growing availability of alternative extension variations today.  For example, .com, net, org, bus, ws.
Info, etc. have all become popular choices. With the explosion of internet traffic and usage this trend will likely continue. However, for the foreseeable future, until you have a widely popular website that receives millions of visitors that will find you no matter where you are, it is advisable that .com be used whenever possible. The com sites still enjoy the largest concentration of search traffic on the web today.

Do a basic search to locate reputable firms to handle your domain registration and web hosting.  A lot of literature suggests having two different companies to handle this, rather than one company doing both. While it can be a pain to get this switched if problems arise, personally I have not heard or read of this being a major issue. However, you should check a couple of forums about this topic before starting your registration process.

The pricing and cost for registration and hosting have become extremely competitive. Make sure to shop around for the right combination of price, features, and capabilities of the firms.  Pay attention to the details of exactly what is included in the monthly prices (and 1-time fees).  While the monthly price may be lower from one to the other provider - the cost for additional services may far outweigh the initial low prices.  Also, the amount of time (duration) of the service agreement can save you lots of money as well. The longer the service commitment, generally - the cheaper the rate plan.  I have found 12-24 months to be a reasonable commitment that yields solid savings.

Regarding the choice of domain names, clearly shorter is better. After all, who can type those long url’s without making typos! No to mention shorter names are easier for you and your clients to remember.  Also, by choosing domain names relevant to your keywords (and vice-versa) the search engines will reward your site on potential customer searches. It is like have a double bonus! For example having my website name of Internet Marketing USA, tied to keyword searches for internet marketing in the USA a highly relevant match, gaining me additional traffic for this combination of terms.

There you have it, some basic information to guide your domain registration activities.  Armed with these tips, you will be up running, getting search engine traffic and revenues in no time.

Top 10 Little Used SEO Strategies

There are millions of web sites trying to get listed in the top 20 to 30 spots on the major search engines. That’s a lot of competition! So if you’re having a hard time getting those spots, maybe you should try some little used but effective seo strategies to get those prized listings.

One way to do that would be to do a search on Google, Yahoo or MSN using the keywords that someone would use to find your website. The key then would be to advertise on the top web sites. Now advertising on these top spots would probably be very expensive.

If you don’t want to spend any money, you could use the ten seo strategies listed below. Remember though, some of these strategies may not apply to every web site.

1. Ask the web site owner if they would like a free ebook to give away to their visitors. You could have them link to your web site to download the ebook or include your links in the free ebook.

2. Write an excellent article review of their web site, products or services. Then publish the review on your web site. Email the web site owner and tell him or her about it. They may link to your web site so their visitors can read it.

3. Submit content to their web site. Write articles and include your links in the resource box. If they are published, you’ll get a link back to your website which will help your search engine ranking.

4. If these top sites have discussion boards or forums then participate. Post questions, answer other peoples questions, and join in on conversations. Just make sure that you include your signature file and link at the end of your messages.

5. Ask the owner of the web site about trading advertising. If you don’t get as much traffic as they do, you could throw in some extra incentives or put their ad on more of your web pages.

6. Give the web site a testimonial for their product or service. Include a text link for your web site within the testimonial. They just might include it in their ad copy.

7. Post your text link on their free-for-all links page, if they have one. You may want to go back and post your link regularly so it stays towards the top.

8. If they have a free classified ad section then post your ads there. Make sure that you have a killer headline so their visitors will click on your ad.

9. If they have a guest book, sign it. Leave a short but sincere compliment about their web site. Be sure to include your signature file and link at the end of your message.

10. Propose a cross promotion deal with the web site. You could promote each others products or services in a package deal. You get your site mentioned and links back to your web site.

Organic SEO: Patience For Long Term Ranking Results

When does long term SEO show ranking results? It takes time for optimization to produce targeted traffic to your website. Organic SEO requires time to take effect, just as it takes time for your web pages to start showing up in the search engine results.

Clients regularly ask me about the timing of a search engine optimization campaign and when those results will be seen in the search engine listings. A long term marketing campaign based on search engine optimization takes time: patience is the name of the game.

Optimization Timeframe

SEO’s timeframe depends on a number of factors. Part of this involves the accuracy of keyword phrase choices: is the keyword phrase one your visitors would use to find your product or website? If your keyword phrases are targeted to your audience, you will gain optimum results. Did you use Paid Inclusion and/or PPC services? The best combination for success involves using a combination of SEO, Paid Inclusion and PPC services. If you do not use Paid Inclusion or PPC, using organic SEO only, it takes more time to achieve results.

Paid Results

When you use Paid Inclusion or PPC (Pay-Per-Click) bidding, your results show up sooner than traditional SEO. Paid Inclusion submissions state the time-frame in which your page will be indexed by the search engine robots when you sign up for services. PPC bidding results show up as soon as searchers start clicking on your PPC ads. This type of search engine marketing requires an annual budget to renew Paid Inclusion submissions and payment per month for PPC click-through costs. If you are paying too much for your PPC services, organic SEO combined with PPC often helps to keep the prices down for the paid service. By generating additional targeted traffic on those costly terms you may be able to bring the bidding prices down in your PPC campaign or even eliminate some keyword bidding.

The timeline given for paid submissions means the search engines are generating income through this process. Paying for results also gives you a guarantee the listings will be relatively stable in the database.

Paid Inclusion submissions will always take precedence over free submissions because the company makes money from Paid Inclusion. For this reason most search engines will implement free search engine submissions over a longer period of time than paid submissions. When using SEO without the paid submission choices, the process is the same but the optimized pages take longer to be processed into the search engine databases.

Organic SEO

Organic SEO works differently. The best reason to use organic SEO is that it is a low-cost method to promote your website. It can take up to three to six months to see the full results of optimizing your website, especially if you are only using organic optimization. The plus to an organic approach is that once you optimize your pages, the main part of the work is done. You may tweak your keywords and text here and there, but unless you completely re-design your pages, you have what you need in place to begin drawing in targeted traffic. Continue checking your ranking status and reading your log statistics, especially for new keywords visitors are using to find your website.

When using free submissions, expect a three to six month wait before seeing most of the long term results showing in the search engine listings. If you build on a link popularity program and have links pointing back to your website, the search engine robots will find your website through the links, eliminating the need for free submissions. Look at it this way: you pay once for basic optimization and over time the results improve to optimum level. You don’t have to keep paying for this service because, unless search engine databases drops your free submission pages (which is not often these days), you will be visible and present to the search engine users when they search on your targeted keyword phrases. Over time you should see a progression in your ranking, depending on how competitive your keyword phrases are.

Budget SEO

What if you can’t afford Paid Inclusion or PPC services? Organic SEO is a great way to increase targeted traffic to your website over time. If you do not have a budget for Paid Inclusion submissions and PPC programs, organic SEO will give you good results if you are willing to wait instead of gaining immediate results. Combine organic SEO with plenty of good content and a solid link building program for optimum results. Remember, the search engine listings may entice visitors to come to your website, but you must give them a reason to stay once they arrive. Build your content to keep your new visitors at your website.

Patience Pays Off

Organic SEO is “common sense” promotion. Not a lot of fancy bells and whistles, and it takes time. The addition of good navigation, good content with your keyword phrases throughout the pages and topical sites pointing links back to your website equals long term success.

Practice patience when going organic for your SEO campaign. It may take time but it will be worth the long term results you reap.

Link Swapping - How to Win the Website Marketing Game in 3 Easy Steps

If you are a webmaster, chances are one of your main concerns is the ranking of your website with the major search engines. Since you are concerned with this, you are probably involved in acquiring links to your websites on the Internet to further increase the link popularity or your site. The reason gaining links to your website is important is because many of the large and popular search engines focus on the amount of links there are to your site when they begin ranking your site. The more links you have, the higher your website will rank. So, if you are not familiar with how to increase your marketing by acquiring links then you need to learn. Fortunately, it is not difficult and will not take a lot of effort, but you will need to be open minded, patient, and always play fair. Consider the following suggestions when you are beginning your link swapping or reciprocal linking campaign.

-Similar Market

The first thing you need to do is find web pages that target a similar market as your website does. It does not have to be the exact market, but a derivative of that market will work as well because you can spread your links out among a variety of different sub-markets and get really great coverage. Regardless, identify the markets you are shooting for and then you will be ready to look for the sites that target these markets.

-Quality Sites

Now that you know the types of markets you want to attract, you will be able to choose websites that are not in direct competition with you and still attract the same types of visitors. Do some research on the sites available and only choose the sites that have high rankings in the search engines and are quality sites that will reflect the quality of your site as well. If you have links to your site on poorly designed websites that are not very popular you will not get much traffic from these.

-Personal Contact

You have your target websites nailed down and now all you have to do is contact them. The best thing to do in this situation is send them a personal e-mail. Avoid using a software program in this case, as you really want to personalize your note to them as much as possible. The reason for this is people are more likely to respond to a real person and the extra time it takes you to write the email shows that getting a link from them is important to you. So, send an e-mail saying you have added a link to their site on your website and ask them politely to add a link back to yours. Also, provide all of the information they might possibly need so adding your link will be easy and take as little time as possible. When you contact people in this manner, you are significantly more likely to gain links. This will take more time and effort, but it also has a higher payoff as well.

Driving Your Website through Google Sandbox

What is Google Sandbox?

Google Sandbox is applied on new websites, it determines the timing of site inclusion as well as ranking in Google search engine results (SERPS). This process could take up to 6-8 months, which could be against your plans causing frustration to webmasters.

The question is what is to be done during the time in which websites are in Google Sandbox?

Do not waste time on checking your website listings in results page instead emphasize on SEO methods to accelerate your listings & improve status of ranking results.

Also make efforts to appear on other major search engines such as MSN & Yahoo since they do not have sandbox like Google, this will help drive traffic to your website while waiting for Googlebot to index your pages.

Link building strategy is another important issue not only will it improve ranking but also it will help Googlebot spider to find your pages easier while it’s in the sandbox instead of repeatedly submitting your website every time.

Content is king

Main part for ongoing development of your website is to add new content on continuous basis since the most thing search engines are after is good quality websites with relevant content.

Conclusion at the end is that waiting for Google Sandbox is nothing but a waste of your precious time; instead do some useful efforts on developing your website with relevant content & adding inbound links as a part of your linking strategy to make Google happy with what it sees as well as your target visitor.

Search Engine Traffic Myths, Time Wasters, and Pitfalls

Everyone wants to increase their rankings with the search engines and because of this there is a ton of information available on how to go about it. Unfortunately, while some of this information is real, there is just as much or more information that is outdated, wrong, and a complete waste of time, money and energy on your part. So, you can read the following and learn about a few of the myths and pitfalls people believe about search engines and in the future you can continue to educate yourself from reputable sites that provide accurate and truthful information.

Myth #1 - Permanent Position

It takes a lot of effort to get a top ranking with the big search engines, but for some reason people believe once they reach this level of success it is permanent, almost like a prize they have earned. However, if you want to keep your prize, or top search placement, you will have no time to celebrate because your site can be bumped from the top list in minutes, hours, or it could be days or weeks. If you do not maintain your website and work on optimizing it every day and making it better, you will be eventually knocked off the list.

Myth #2 - All Search Engines

Another funny myth and pitfall many newcomers to the web fall into is that you must get your website submitted to all of the existing search engines in order to optimize your traffic and get more sales. However, the amount of time and effort you would need to put into this will more than likely outweigh its benefits. You want to make sure your page is indexed in Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other similar large and popular search engines. This is where most of your traffic will come from and where you want to be.

Myth #3 - High Rankings are Easy

Getting a high ranking is not easy, it is actually very hard. People want you to think it is easy to get a top ranking, but in actuality it requires a lot of effort, time, money, and dedication to get a top search engine ranking and maintain it. This is because all of the search engines are looking for something different, websites are changing on a daily basis with new sites, new information, and the like. SO, as you can see, all this change makes it difficult and unpredictable to get a high ranking and maintain it without a lot of concerted effort.

There are many pitfalls and myths that are associated with search engines and increasing your traffic. What you need to keep in mind is nothing is automatic or easy. This is a business and it will require you to put forth the effort and time your website needs if you want to be number one or at least among the best.

How to Google; or How to be Easily Distracted

I set out with the intention of writing a self improvement type article with an original temporary working title of ‘How To Overcome Fear’.

Being the sound marketing man that I am though, my first action was to research whether this was relevant to many peoples lives.

What followed was a mistake.

I had read recently about a ‘Google Suggest’ in Beta test mode (http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1), and so I thought I would give it a whirl.

I should have known better - distractions on the web happen to me all the time.

The next hour passed effortlessly away as I played with the new found toy.

This is Google’s own description of the tool:

‘What is Google Suggest?

As you type into the search box, Google Suggest guesses what you’re typing and offers suggestions in real time. This is similar to Google’s “Did you mean?” feature that offers alternative spellings for your query after you search, except that it works in real time. For example, if you type “bass,” Google Suggest might offer a list of refinements that include “bass fishing” or “bass guitar.” Similarly, if you type in only part of a word, like “progr,” Google Suggest might offer you refinements like “programming,” “programming languages,” “progesterone,” or “progressive.” You can choose one by scrolling up or down the list with the arrow keys or mouse.

That’s pretty cool. How does it do that? Our algorithms use a wide range of information to predict the queries users are most likely to want to see. For example, Google Suggest uses data about the overall popularity of various searches to help rank the refinements it offers…’

Here are some thought provoking results:

‘How to overcome fear’ - 2,580,000 results

‘How to overcome anxiety’ - 119,000 results

At least I am right to be targeting my article towards those expressing concern about fear.

But here is the strange thing - Google sponsored AdWord links for ‘anxiety’ is twelve, but ‘fear’ only has three.

There are many more anomolies such as this in a very short time.

Furthermore, look at these interesting results from Google Suggest:

The really amazing thing is how big some of the search results are:

‘How to be happy’ 95,000,000 results - sponsored links, nine.

AND

What about these:

‘How to be hot’ - 192,000,000 and get this - NIL Google sponsored links.

‘How to be humble’ - 6,700,000 - NIL Google sponsored links.

This last example has been included, as it is more surprising in that even the normal Google search for the keyword phrase ‘how to be humble’ throws up results that bear vary little resemblance to the searched term. Try it and see.

What absorbed me were the ranking figures showing on the right. IF the figures are correct I can confidently state that product producers, affiliates and advertisers are really missing out on a lot of massively searched niches.

Have I found a goldmine? Should I be revealing all this?

Well I don’t know, and frankly I am puzzled by what the ‘Google Suggest’ numbers really represent.

I am not going to get that excited as I have just been to Wordtracker which gave me these results for two of the above terms.

‘How to be hot’ - 13 searches in the last 110 days

‘How to be humble’ No searches in the last 110 days.

So where do the ‘Google Suggest’ figures come from? Can you throw any light on this, because if you can it will save me being distracted further in search of the truth.

Oh - and there is still that article to write about overcoming fear. Down to it.

Google, BackRub, Backlinking, and the Link Hunting Obsession that Takes Its Toll

Google is currently one of the dominant entities on the net period. The question is - is it really that omnipotent, is it really that advantageous. The question is ? IS IT REALLY “ALL THAT”.

To understand role of Google in the modern net society we need to go deep into its roots. Google was born at hands of Larry Page (rich boy) and perfected by Sergey Brin (russian rich boy) at Stanford University. The idea was to rank internet pages based on number of other pages linking back. For Brin it was sort of academic approach to web page ranking where web page would model for academic paper and back links it receives would model for number of citations that academic paper accounts for. Very interesting model indeed and in a sense is very useful in the academics; bus is this model as useful in the world of internet information ranking? Does this formula objectively represent the way any given website or webpage should be ranked among other competitors? Let me be the first one to disagree.

The Google that we are all using now is a very different Google that it used to be. Thanks to brains of Brin it has evolved from simply counting backward links to an algorithm that is protected better than our troops on a foreign soil. However, the basic idea is still the same and ranking is given based on number of links your site receives from other relevant sources. So what is the problem, you might ask. Lets imagine that you have created a brand new website that centers on certain topic of interest. Lets imagine that you are an expert in that topic and you have created the best website ever on that particular topic: it covers more information than any other source on the net, it offers simplicity in navigation, it offers largest and well organized library of sources on that particular topic, it complies with w3 standards, and it even can be seen in any browser in the world including all the hand held devices. That perfect site which would be very useful to many individuals around the world would end up at the bottom of the Google ranking system unless you spend countless hours trying to get links from relevant sites, trying to pay for fraudulent looking link services, getting frustrated, and still ending up at the bottom of the Google ranking system because some of your competitors have figure out a way to create numerous doorway pages, link scams, and so on. Just because your perfect site does not account for a large number of backwards links will bring your ranking down and will bring down with it all your hard work and desire to share your expertise with others. Some day you Google up that perfect site’s key word, that common sensed key word that should bring your perfect site at the top of the search results. You look at the results and you realize that there is nothing but bunch of irrelevant pages full of advertising and its all due to the fact that some geeks know how to beat the system. Now you tell me ? is that a fare way of ranking pages?

Google and its strategy brought plenty of hardship to ordinary website owners. Instead of updating and perfecting their sites owners have to hunt for links using all available means. Most of the time site owners are getting trapped into services that are questionable in nature. This environment creates numerous pitfalls for web surfers as well. Web surfers become victims of doorway pages with meaningless and countless key word links, smart redirect pages that throw you to places full of ads, and bad websites that managed to get gazillions links using their questionable techniques. All that commotion creates nothing but bad experience for anyone who is in search of information on the internet. Is that how the search engine should work, is that how omnipotent search engine should work, is that how billions making search engine should work?

2 Lesser Known Ways to Brainstorm for Internet Home Business Keywords

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) doctrine states that you should always find a keyword that has little to no competition and that has high demand so that you can rise to the top of the search engine results and dominate that particular keyword. The problem with the internet home business area is that many people online are creating new websites with the typical keywords like “work from home” and “home business” so as a result it is almost impossible to rise to the top of the search engines or risking having to pay lots of money for pay per click advertising.

Instead of trying to compete with long established websites in the internet home business niche or high paying pay per click advertisers, this article suggests two ways you can think outside of the box and think of new keywords to promote your internet home business and its products.

Motivations and the internet business opportunity

It has been said that if you figure out someone’s motivations well enough, you can determine what he could do. Instead of hitting the “work at home” keyword when promoting your internet business opportunity, why not instead start thinking of reasons why people would join an internet home business. Reasons such as early retirement, starting part time income, quitting the rat race, getting out of debt come to mind. So if you target the reasons why someone would be interested in an internet business opportunity you are in effect targeting your actual online target audience.

So what you could do is write articles on these topics, optimize your websites to these topics with links to your internet home business which fit in with these motivations rather than the run of the mill work at home business websites.

Another way to generate more internet business signups is to hang out at website forums that discuss such things and offer some constructive advice and have a signature that leads to your internet home business website. If people trust your advice on the forums, they are more likely to trust the internet home business that you promote.

Solve health problems

Many internet home businesses have as their products health supplements. The reason for this is that such products are consumable and can be consumed monthly. As a result of this, nearly every internet home business owner selling vitamins either floods the Google Adwords with ads promoting vitamins or builds websites promoting vitamins.

One way around this problem is to find keywords targeting the problem rather than the solution. E.g. Heart attack if you are trying to promote antioxidants. Do some research into the area you are talking about and then either build a website that tells people more information about their health problems or advertise your product via Google Adwords as the solution to such a problem. Your competition may be significantly lower than if you had targeted “Vitamins” directly. So the lower the competition, the potential more money you might make with regards to product sales.

In conclusion, always aim to find these niches and once you do, spend time on Search Engine Optimization in addition to PayperClick advertising and you will find that in the longer run you will make more money online that you would have dreamed with your internet home business.
